Prepositions (คำบุพบท)
คือคำที่ใช้เชื่อม หรือแสดงความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างคำต่อคำ เช่น นามต่อนาม, กริยากับกริยา, สรรพนามกับนาม, หรือนามกับสรรพนาม หรือจะเรียกอีกอย่างหนึ่งว่า คำบอกตำแหน่ง
คำบุพบทที่ควรรู้จัก ได้แก่ in - ข้างใน
on - ข้างบน
at - ที่
near - ใกล้
next to - ถัดไป
behind - ข้างหลัง
beside – ข้าง ๆ
in front of - ด้านหน้า
opposite - ตรงกันข้าม
over – เหนือ,ด้านบน
above - เหนือ
คำบุพบทนิยมใช้กับ verb to be ( is, am, are)
ตัวอย่าง 1. ฉันอยู่ในห้อง
= I am in the room.
2. พัดลมอยู่เหนือศีรษะเรา
= The fan is above our head.
Preposition แบ่งออกเป็น
1. Preposition of place คำบุพบทที่ใช้บอกเกี่ยวกับสถานที่
ได้แก่ in, on, at
การใช้ at ใช้กับสถานที่หน่วยที่เล็กที่สุด เช่น จุดนัดพบ หรือที่ ๆ เฉพาะเจาะจงลงไป เช่น ที่บ้าน ที่ป้ายรถเมย์ ที่สนามเด็กเล่น ที่โรงหนัง ที่ห้างสรรพสินค้าเป็นต้น
ตัวอย่าง - Jim wants to see me at the movies theatre.
จิมต้องการพบฉันที่โรงหนัง
- Mary is at the bus stop.
แมรี่อยู่ที่ป้ายรถเมย์
การใช้ on ใช้กับสิ่งที่อยู่บน เช่น บนโต๊ะ (table) บนต้นไม้ (tree) บนหนังสือ (book) บนเก้าอี้ (chair) บนถนน (road) บนพื้น (floor)
ตัวอย่าง - We sit on the floor.

การใช้ in ใช้กับสถานหน่วยที่ใหญ่ขึ้นมา และใหญ่มาก เช่น ประเทศ จังหวัด หรือเมืองที่ใหญ่และเป็นที่รู้จักอย่างกว้างขวาง ห้องต่าง ๆ ในสวน เป็นต้น
ตัวอย่าง - My mother is cooking in the kitchen.

การใช้ [ in, on, by] กับยานพาหนะ
in : ใช้กับยานพาหนะที่มีสภาพปิด กำบัง เช่น the car, on the plane…
on : ใช้กับยานพาหนะที่มีสภาพเปิดโล่ง แจ้ง ไม่ปกปิดกำบัง เช่น on a house, on a motor-cycle..
by : ใช้ได้ทั้งปิดและเปิด แต่ต้องไม่มี article นำหน้า เช่น by bus by train by plane

2. Preposition of time คำบุพบทที่ใช้บอกเกี่ยวกับเวลา
ได้แก่ in, on, at
การใช้ at ใช้กับหน่วยของเวลาที่เป็น ชั่วโมง เช่น at nine o’clock, at seven o’clock, at half past ten หรือใช้กับช่วงเทศกาล เช่น ช่วงปีใหม่ at New Year, at Christmas, at Valentines, at the beginning, at the end, at night, at noon
การใช้ on ใช้กับวัน เช่น on Monday, on Tuesday
ใช้กับวันที่ เช่น on 18 May, on 2 June
ใช้กับวันต่าง ๆ เช่น on New Year’s Day, on Christmas Day,
on Valentine’s Day
การใช้ in ใช้กับช่วงเวลา เช่น ช่วงเช้า ช่วงบ่าย ช่วงเย็น in the morning, in the

Preposition ระดับสูงที่ควรรู้จัก
การใช้ During, between, among มีหลักเกณฑ์ดังนี
คำทั้ง 3 แปลว่า “ ระหว่าง “ แต่ใช้ต่างกันดังนี้
During: ใช้สำหรับบอกระยะเวลาการกระทำช่วงใดช่วงหนึ่งตามที่ระบุไว้ในประโยค เช่น During visiting Thailand, I had seen the Emerald Buddha Temple. ระหว่างการมาเที่ยวประเทศไทย ฉันได้ไปชมวัดพระแก้ว เป็นต้น.
Between: ใช้สำหรับคั่นระหว่างของสองอย่าง หรือคนสองคน เช่น She is standing between you and me. หล่อนยืนอยู่ระหว่างคุณและผม (เมื่อใช้ between ต้องมี and ตามเสมอ).
Among : ใช้สำหรับคั่นหรือเชื่อมนาม ที่มีจำนวนตั้งแต่ 3 ขึ้นไป เช่น The teacher is standing among us . เป็นต้น
การใช้ [on, over, above] มีหลักดังนี้
on : ใช้บอกว่าของที่อยู่บนที่ติดอยู่กับอันล่าง.
Over : ใช้บอกว่าของอยู่เหนือหัวพอดี.
Above : ใช้บอกว่าของนั้นอยู่ด้านบน(กว้างๆ).
บุพบทชนิด 2 ตัว ได้แก่
according to ตาม , instead of แทน , แทนที่
because of เพราะว่า, owing to เนื่องจาก.
บุพบทชนิด 3 ตัวได้แก่บุพบทต่อไปนี้คือ
in order to +v1 : เพื่อที่จะ ,
by means of + N : โดยอาศัย
on account of +N : เนื่องจาก ,
in spite of +N : ถึงแม้ว่า
in front of +N : ข้างหน้า ,
in back of +N : ข้างหลัง
for the sake of : เพื่อเห็นแก่ ,
of the point of : เกือบจะ
on the point of : เกือบจะ ,
in consequence of : เนื่องจากว่า
* หมายเหตุ ในเรื่องการใช้บุพบทนี้ ยังมี กริยาบางตัวที่มีข้อบังคับว่าต้องใช้บุรพบทตัวใดตามหลังอีกด้วย เช่น belong to (เป็นของ ), arrive at (มาถึงสถานที่เล็กๆ), ask….for (ขอ), agree with (เห็นด้วย, ตกลงด้วย), consist of (ประกอบด้วย) protect from (ป้องกันจาก), believe in (เชื่อ,มีศรัทธา), live on (กินเป็นอาหาร) , make of (ทำด้วย), be afraid of (กลัว,เกรงกลัว) เป็นต้น
